About Maps
Purpose of the Map
To determine the amount of area a map needs to cover we need to take into consideration what the map is trying to accomplish and how it is being presented.

Directional Map
Getting from one point to another. Plot the easiest route from the closest major interstate or turoughfare and work in from that point (there may be more than one and your destination may be offset from center in order to bring in the point of entry from the main turoughfare(s). EXAMPLE: From I-90 take exit 126 (Route 18) to north on Route 18 to west onto Name Street, and so on.

Location Map
A location map shows a large area in less detail. It may indicate a major city, interstates and waterways along with the destination to give a general idea of location. (This map can be combined with a directional map by minipulating scale.) EXAMPLE: It is northwest of the metro area

Area Map
Depicts a local vicinity or neighborhood and can include roads, points of interest, local amenities, and the destination. This map can be combined with a directional map depending upon location to the main turoughfare(s). EXAMPLE: it is in the historic district.
